Found throughout Western Europe Rabbits live communally with other Rabbits in burrows known as warrens. They are often above ground during the day. Most people probably think of Myxomatosis when they think of the Rabbit. This first struck Britain in 1953 when the virus was being cross infected from rabbit to rabbit via the Rabbit Flea and was estimated to have killed 99% of the population. These days the strain is less severe and most rabbits are able to overcome the virus. Although most would concur that we do not want to see pre Myxomatosis levels; it is illegal to purposefully spread the disease to control populations. Relevant damage occurs mainly to farmers’ crops, newly planted shrubs, bowling lawns and golf courses.
